The Group's aim is to identify, survey, protect and promote geological and geomorphological sites in the former County of Avon - the modern unitary authorities of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. RIGS are selected for their educational, research, historical and aesthetic value.

What can I do if I become a member of the Avon RIGS Group?

Please note that no geological knowledge is necessary and membership is free!


- Protect and conserve the geodiversity of Bristol, Bath and NE Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset

- Get involved in geological activities with other like-minded members

- Carry out geological site surveys

- Identify and propose geological sites for RIGS designation

- Contribute site interpretations, details of minerals and fossils of the area and articles of geological interest to this blog

- Prepare geological leaflets, trail guides and books

- Take part in rock, mineral and fossil events


- Work with site clearance teams 

We also hold regular meetings to discuss the progress of the Group.
